28 Novembre 2024
With more than 1,500 accredited attendees and over 40 events - including pitch sessions, panels, workshops, keynotes and screenings - proposed in the 7 days of programming, TFI Torino Film Industry closes the 7th edition with constantly growing numbers, increasingly consolidating its identity as a workshop for independent co-production and its positioning among the b-to-b events of the national and international audiovisual sector.
9 pitching sessions with the presentation of 51 projects in development, 17 panels, 14 including workshops, keynotes and masterclasses, 104 hours of training and refresher courses in the days immediately preceding, 21 immersive projects, 380 one-to-one meetings between producers and decision makers of the audiovisual sector and 7 screening-events at the Greenwich Village Cinema.
The 7th edition of TFI Torino Film Industry - promoted by Regione Piemonte and Città di Torino and created with the support of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and the Camera di Commercio di Torino - closes with great satisfaction and numbers once again on the rise. In the 7 days of activity it recorded the presence of more than 1,500 accredited people, offering a transversal, widespread, cohesive program proposed by the 7 partners of the initiative.
An edition that, deliberately playing with the symbolic dimension of the number 7, has translated into a complex calendar of events designed to photograph and support the entire audiovisual industry, configuring itself as a true observatory and market capable of intercepting the needs and evolutions of the audiovisual and enriching itself year after year with new proposals and activities.
To support the activities of the founders of the initiative - namely Film Commission Torino Piemonte, which has coordinated the market since its beginning, TorinoFilmLab and Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio which has proposed ShorTO Film Market since this year - the collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema has been further consolidated through Lovers Film Festival and, starting this year, with the additional prestigious presence of Festival CinemAmbiente. Also important is the reconfirmation of Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo with onLive Campus, a partnership successfully launched last year.
The variety of proposals that the network of Piedmontese entities has programmed has once again been integrated and enriched by the presence of the “Partner Event” IDS Italian Doc Screenings, a flagship event of Doc/it - Associazione Documentaristi Italiani which for the 5th consecutive year has chosen to take place during TFI Torino Film Industry.
Film Commission Torino Piemonte - Production Days
7 panels, 7 workshops, 3 pitching sessions and 3 structured one-to-one meetings are the numbers that summarize what was curated and proposed by Film Commission Torino Piemonte – which has coordinated TFI since its first edition – for this 7th edition of Production Days, a co-production meeting that aims to strengthen a recognized ecosystem of independent cinema, capable of highlighting the richness and vitality of the local sector, of the entities that compose it, of the professionals who represent it.
43 Piedmontese production companies took part in the Production Days, presenting 84 projects in development and 38 in an advanced stage to 24 selected Decision Makers during 123 one-to-one meetings.
From the opening pitch session dedicated to the movie theater, through the search for originality and talent in the presentation of the 7 projects of the Bando Sviluppo supported by Compagnia di San Paolo and the 7 finalist novels of the fourth edition of “Guarda che Storia! Racconti per lo schermo” - together with the special “Spotlight On Sardinia” - there were more than 120 one-to-one meetings finalized during the event.
A succession of concrete opportunities for discussion and debate that confirmed the intentions and objectives of the eve, thanks also to the participation of players and partners of national caliber - starting from ANAD - National Association of Actors and Dubbers, Anica, Anica Academy, APA, CNA Cinema and Audiovisual - and the presence of important Decision Makers of the industry - 01 Distribution, Amazon Studios, Cinecittà Luce, Discovery, Eagle Pictures, I Wonder, MIA International Audiovisual Market, Rai Cinema, Rai Documentari together with the Università degli Studi di Torino and the Politecnico di Torino - crucial in qualifying the event in the panorama of btob events of the national audiovisual.
TorinoFilmLab – TFL Italia
The TorinoFilmLab represents the most international soul of TFI and has been a partner since the first edition. Organized by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, the TFL has 17 years of activity behind it with partners and professionals at a global level and 220 titles between films and TV series developed, supported and presented to the public.
The program proposed by the lab inside TFI follows the objectives and training methods of the TFL and – with the dedicated section TFL Italia – has brought together experts of diversified skills that held 50 hours of sessions with the eight feature film projects – 4 Italian and 4 international – participating in the Boost IT Lab workshop. In addition to providing them with all the tools necessary to refine their transnational potential and enter the world of co-production, the TFL offered them the opportunity to establish collaborations thanks to 53 one-to-one meetings; a sold out of meetings that generated another 26 meetings organized alongside online and informal occasions. Numbers that are clearly increasing year after year, which demonstrate how TFL Italia is the ideal place to find quality projects that are suitable for an international context, thanks also to partners such as Apulia Film Commission, ECAM and Film Centre of Montenegro.
Furthermore, the workshop on STORY EDITING held by Erica Barbiani on Tuesday 26th reached its maximum attendance, enriching the wide and varied program of TFI 7.
Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio – ShorTO Film Market
The two intense days dedicated by ShorTO to the short form of Italian and international cinema were more than positive, with 45 guests including authors, producers, distributors, cultural operators, 8 projects in development presented by author/producer teams, the vast majority of which were under 35, 90 one-to-one meetings and a screening of the short films selected at the Critics' Week, which sold out.
During this edition, two wide-ranging initiatives were launched, through an important round table on the short film ecosystem in Italy, a prelude to new research that the Centro del Corto will dedicate to the sector in the coming years, and the launch of a new project, Road to Euro Connection/Italy, aimed at promoting the mobility abroad of young Italian authors with the intent of helping them more effectively reach the international market.
ShorTo 2024 has therefore laid the foundations for activities not limited to the Market days, but which, continuing throughout the year, will culminate in the 2025 edition of TFI.
Lovers Film Festival – Lovers Goes Industry
Now approaching the incredible milestone of 40 candles, the Lovers Film Festival consolidates and strengthens its position as a reference as an LGBTQAI+ themed festival not only in Italy, but throughout the entire international film scene, also through the specific industry activities organized as part of TFI7.
The programming touched the first 2 days of TFI, offering the audience of professionals the panel “Breaking Boundaries. The creativity journey (and struggle) of LGBTQIA+ series to mainstream success” which saw Ludovico Bessegato, director and screenwriter of highly successful titles such as Skam Italia and Prisma, at the center of the scene. Great success and participation for the workshop on “Pitch Training” where Davide Nardini, Head of Scripted Originals Italy at Amazon Studios, spoke with the participants explaining how to best enhance the presentation of their projects.
Ample space was also dedicated to the 6 international projects - 1 feature film, 1 TV series, 2 documentaries and 2 short films, one of which was animated - selected to present themselves to a select group of Decision Makers, directors, distributors, producers, festival delegates who discussed the titles in more than 30 one-to-one meetings.
Lovers Goes Industry aims to be an opportunity for industry professionals (directors, distributors, producers, festival delegates from all over the world) gathered together in Turin for the splendid setting of the TFI – Torino Film Industry.
Festival CinemAmbiente – EcoTalks
The first participation of the Festival CinemAmbiente at TFI Torino Film Industry was more than positive. The screening of “Terra incognita” by Enrico Masi was sold out, further recognition of the importance of an Italian film on an environmental theme of international standing, as was the subsequent meeting with the director, held the following day at the Circolo dei lettori.
The meeting dedicated to sustainability in the film industry was also sold out, ranging from positive “case studies” of sustainability on set and in post-production to the mandatory green certificates for films that want to access public funding and which Regione Piemonte was the first to establish in Italy. The meeting resulted in the request to dedicate specific panels to the sustainability of each phase of the supply chain in the future, a sign that in the audiovisual sector the interest in the environmental theme is real and is becoming increasingly active and concrete.
Piemonte dal Vivo – onLive Campus
The second edition of onLive, a project conceived by Piemonte dal Vivo in 2020 and developed under the scientific direction of Simone Arcagni, ends with a balance sheet full of reflections and perspectives. At the heart of the initiative, in the ideal context of the TFI Torino Film Industry, crucial themes for the future of live digital entertainment have intertwined, from emerging technologies such as the metaverse and Extended Reality (XR) to video dance and innovative accessibility solutions.
The preview of "onLive. White Book on Live Digital Entertainment in Italy" (ed. Luiss University Press) represented the ideal culmination of this journey. Promoted by Piemonte dal Vivo and edited by Simone Arcagni and Lucio Argano, in collaboration with ADV - Arti Digitali dal Vivo, the volume collects contributions from over twenty experts, offering a complete and critical map of the evolutions, challenges and opportunities of a constantly evolving sector. This work not only provides an in-depth snapshot of the national scene, but suggests new strategies to enhance and develop live digital entertainment in our country.
Between creative hybridizations, moments of discussion and innovative projects, onLive has once again confirmed its ability to be a laboratory of ideas and a privileged observatory on a constantly evolving cultural and technological panorama.
Doc/it - Associazione Documentaristi Italiani – IDS Italian Doc Screenings
TFI hosted the 18th edition of IDS Italian Doc Screenings, a flagship event of Doc/it – Associazione Documentaristi Italiani, which in this edition saw the participation of 28 authors, producers and junior producers, engaged in an intensive four-day workshop, under the guidance of tutors with international experience, dedicated to the improvement and growth of the 10 selected projects.
The intensive training culminated on November 25th at the Circolo dei lettori, with the Matchmaking: a pitch session that brought together an audience of 35 producers and experts in the sector, where participants had the opportunity to present their projects. Finally, in the afternoon, the one-to-one meetings, which this year exceeded 80, favored a dense exchange of ideas and the start of collaborations potentially decisive for the development of the works. The IDS ACADEMY program was completed by the unmissable panels, called Talks and Share: “Documentary distribution in Italy – scenarios and opportunities in the framework of the new legislation on cinema and audiovisual” and “Towards the Italian documentary system”. Finally, a new feature this year was the Masterclass with director Milad Tansghir.
Another highlight was the awarding of the DPA - Doc/it Professional Award: the recognition for Best Italian Documentary 2024 went to “Lonely” by Michele Pennetta, while the award for Best Italian Documentary Series 2024 was assigned to “Zona Protetta” by Giulia Cacchioni, Chiara Campara, Giulia Lapenna, Giansalvo Pinocchio and Pietro Porporati.
IDS thus continues to be an essential point of reference for the growth of documentary professionals, creating a bridge between creativity, industry and the public.
Panels and workshops held in the Sala Grande and Sala Biblioteca del Circolo dei lettori will be available for accredited participants starting December 11th with modalities that will be specifically communicated.
